I recently had the opportunity to go on one of my Bucket List trips to Antarctica! It was an amazing adventure, and I wanted to share it so you can add this incredible d

I was accompanied by one of my favorite travel buddies, my 20-year-old daughter, Regan. We decided to head down a day early since I recommend that to all my clients. You really don’t want any flight issues to cause you to miss the boat. We arrived in Buenos Aires early in the morning and hit the ground running! We had a private day-tour of the city and got to tour the Recoleta Cemetery where First Lady Eva Peron is buried. We saw the colorful La Boca neighborhood and attended a tango show with delicious Argentinian beef and wine, and delightful local artists.

The next morning we had a short 3 and a half hour charter flight to Ushuaia. This was arranged by the cruise company, so we didn’t have to do anything other than check in at the airport. Next time, I would like to spend more time in Ushuaia because it was simply gorgeous. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the Beagle Channel, this town is nicknamed “The End of the World” and is the gateway to Patagonia.

Once in Ushuaia, we boarded the ship for our 9-night journey to the White Continent! The first two days are spent crossing the dreaded Drake Passage. You can get lucky and have the Drake Lake, or not so lucky and have the Drake Shake! We got lucky, and the captain told us it was the calmest crossing you could hope for. Waves were still 30 – 40 feet and many people were getting seasick (Regan included). I spent the days checking out the ship and attending many of the lectures onboard given by members of the expedition team. There were many informative sessions on whales, birds of Antarctica, the sled-dogs of Antarctica, how to properly use binoculars (that are supplied free-of-charge in every cabin for use during the cruise). There were also a few mandatory sessions from IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) going over all the rules and regulations for visiting Antarctica. There are a bunch, but the main disappointing rule is no hugging a penguin. Not even if they want one!

Visiting Antarctica is heavily regulated, for good reason. Only boats carrying less than 500 people are allowed to disembark and go on land. Only 100 people are allowed on any site at one time, and there must be 1 hour break between groups. You must disinfect your boots (that are provided by the ship) and any walking sticks or tripods that touched the ground. You are not allowed to sit, kneel, or lay on the ground. During the lectures they talked about how not to disturb “penguin highways” and how far away to stay away from the wildlife. They are very concerned about Avian Flu, so are being extra precautious. Antarctica is a very pristine environment and they are hoping to keep it that way for as long as possible. They stressed the 3 main rules for visiting Antarctica: flexibility, flexibility and flexibility!

We arrived at the South Shetland Islands on the afternoon of day 3, but the weather was not cooperative, so we kept going and finally the next afternoon the weather cleared up and we were able to have a Zodiac Exploration of Cierva Cove. We saw large colonies of Antarctic Terns and giant Albatross. There were Gentoo penguin colonies, seals swimming in the water, pods of orca whales, and giant icebergs that we were able to sail around and get up close to. It was a glorious first glimpse at this amazing place!

The next morning we were able to explore Jougla Point, home to a LOT of gorgeous little Gentoo penguins, whale bones, and just across the bay from Port Lockroy, the Antarctica Post Office! Due to the weather, we were only able to explore one place that day, but it was definitely worth it. The next day the sky cleared up and we were able to take a Zodiac cruise around Foyn Harbor where we saw fur seals, leopard seals, lots more bird colonies, and a shipwreck.

That afternoon, with an iceberg floating by, and a gentle fall of snow, 106 out of the 164 passengers onboard participated in the POLAR PLUNGE! The water was 31 degrees, and we were in our bathing suit, strapped into a bungee cable, and walked down the gang-plank to jump into the icy cold water! Afterwards, we were walked back up and given shots of tequila to warm the blood. It was an amazing experience that we will not soon forget, and they even gave everyone who participated a certificate. The ship also had a professional photographer taking pictures of everyone and sent them to us after we got back home. Later that afternoon was our first continental landing, on Portal Point. We all took pictures with an Antarctica flag, and saw a sleeping seal up close.

The next morning we got a phone call that we had moved off the waitlist for the kayaks, but I wanted to go ashore, so Regan went with the group. It turned out to be the kayak trip of a lifetime, as their group followed a mama and 2 baby humpback whales for over 2 hours, watching them breach and hearing their incredible whale call! I went on the continent again at Neko Harbor and just enjoyed the surroundings. Watching the penguins waddle by, hearing the loud cracks of the ice calving, listening to the whale sounds in the harbor, it was a day I will never forget. That afternoon we had one last stop, at Danco Island. It had turned into a beautiful sunny day and the penguins were out in full force, we even got to see a little fluffy baby that hadn’t molted yet.

All too soon, it was time to head back through the Drake Passage (another smooth crossing) and head home. We got into Ushuaia earlier than expected so were able to get off the ship and walk around and explore and eat dinner in town. The next day we started the long journey home. This trip was absolutely the trip of a lifetime and I encourage everyone to put this destination at the very top of your list of places to visit. I will definitely go back to visit my lovely little penguin friends.

Passport Prices Have Gone Up

Effective December 27, 2021, the price of US passport books increased by $20 for all customers. The new pricing for a first-time or replacement adult passport will be $1

65; a renewal will be $130 and the expedited fee will remain $60. The State Department said the increase is necessary to “ensure we continue to produce one of the most secure travel and identity documents in the world.”

he good news is that soon Americans will be able to renew their passports online. This means you will no longer need to send in physical documents and paper checks through the mail, and it should speed up the renewal process. The online renewal process could take between 6 – 12 months to take effect, so for now, you still have to use snail mail.

There has been a backlog in processing passports due to the pandemic, but as of October, the State Department said wait times were between 8 – 11 weeks, or 5 – 7 weeks for expedited services.

What's New for Travel in 2021

We just wanted to share some important travel updates with you, as places slowly begin to reopen.

           REAL ID

          – This was postponed from last year, but beginning October 1, 2021, everyone will need a REAL ID to travel on domestic flights. REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses will have a marking in the top portion of the card, either a gold or black star, a gold or black circle with a star cut out, or a gold bear with a star cut out (CA). You can also use a passport as ID for domestic travel.

           Passports

          – Passport operations have resumed, although they are still experiencing significant delays due to the unprecedented mail volume and other COVID impacts on the postal service. The current turnaround time is estimated at 10 – 12 weeks. Expedited service is available for an additional $60 and you should have your passport back in 4 – 6 weeks. You can only apply in person in case of life or death emergency or urgent travel, but it must be within 72 hours of travel, and you will need an appointment.

           COVID Testing for US

          – Anyone traveling overseas will need a COVID test (molecular NAAT or antigen) within 3 days of your return to the US. Even if you have had the vaccine, you will still need to provide negative test results for your return flight.

           Wanna Get Away?

Here are some of the countries that are currently open for travel and diving…

           Bahamas

          – Negative PCR test required within 5 days of arrival, and again on day 5 of your trip

           Belize

          – No testing required to enter the country, must have travel insurance to cover quarantine in case you test positive for your return to the US

New CDC Guidelines for Returning to the US

The CDC has issued new guidelines this week for passengers returning to the US. Beginning on January 26, 2021, anyone (age 2 and up) returning to the United States from another country will have to show proof of a negative test (NAAT or antigen test) before boarding their flight. The test must be taken within 3 days of departure and you will need to show documentation (written or electronic) to the airline. Anyone who previously had COVID can show official proof that they have recovered, which is a positive COVID test result from the last 3 months and a letter from a health care provider that states they are cleared for travel. If you decline to take a test, or do not have proof of results, you will not be allowed to board.

If you have a positive result, or even a negative result but still have COVID symptoms, you will not be allowed to board. Even if you have had the vaccine, you will still need a negative COVID test.

Once you are home, the CDC recommends that you take another test within 3 – 5 days and limit your movements for at least 7 days even if your test is negative.

Lots of resorts that Travel Masters works with already have plans to have testing available on site. These will be available at an extra cost (most resorts are only charging their cost for the test). If you have any questions about the testing requirements please speak to us today!

Who is ready for some good news in 2020? Hawaiian Airlines announced this week that it will start flying non-stop between Austin and Honolulu beginning on April 21, 2021. Tickets are already on sale for the twice weekly flights. Flights will arrive in Austin on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and depart from Austin on Thursdays and Sundays.

Currently, Austin is one of the largest US cities that doesn’t have a non-stop flight option to Hawaii, and that’s what appealed to the airline. It will be Hawaiian Airlines first market in the south-central US.

There are COVID travel regulations currently in place, but we will be monitoring them for any changes that come up before the first flight takes off!

Tales from a Traveler

Last weekend my husband and I, along with his parents, went to Chicago. It was our first mid-COVID trip, so I thought I would share our travel experience with you!

We arrived extra early, just in case there were extra security or cleaning measures in place. And it was a good thing since my father-in-law lost his key fob and couldn’t get his car to lock! Always get to the airport early, people – you never know what will happen!

We used the self check-in kiosk for Southwest Airlines. You can use the Southwest App to download your boarding pass so you don’t have to deal with paper. We didn’t check any bags, so we proceeded to security. My husband and I have TSA Pre-check so we were able to breeze through security. The TSA officer asked us to lower our mask so he could verify our face with our ID. Other than that, everyone in line wore their mask the whole time.

There weren’t many people waiting in the gate area, so we were able to spread out some. Most of the restaurants were closed, so we had to walk a ways to find something to eat. When it came time to board, they only allowed 10 people to queue up at a time. Once those 10 were on board the airplane, they called the next group of 10. It went pretty quickly, and we were on board in no time.

Right now, Southwest isn’t filling the middle seats, so we were lucky to get the exit row, and have a window and aisle seat to ourselves! During the flight, the flight attendants brought cups of water and snacks to everyone, and collected the trash afterwards. Masks must be worn during the flight, except when you are eating or drinking.

Disembarking was like the good old days, where everyone stood up as soon as we docked at the gate, but most people observed good social distance from the people around them as they were leaving the plane.

We all felt safe, and felt like everyone was doing their part to social distance and wear masks. I would not hesitate to travel again soon. Like, maybe next week! Stay tuned!

Nautilus Liveaboards welcomed their first divers in over 3 months this week! They spent their time off being very productive, and did a massive refit, overhaul and refurbishment of the Belle Amie. Not only did the entire ship get a fresh coat of paint, but the engines were overhauled, machinery was taken apart and inspected, the interior was renovated, and safety and fire systems were renewed and rectified. The crew also went through extensive training in COVID 19 cleaning processes and protocols. They have also installed touchless hand washing stations throughout the ship and hired hospital staff to pre-screen all guests and crew prior to boarding.

I recently saw an article that screamed, Japan will PAY you to come visit! It said Japan was looking for people to travel there to boost their COVID afflicted tourism industry, and now you can get a trip to Japan, practically for free! Stage 3 of Japan’s reopening plan included a campaign to boost tourism with a $12 billion stimulus. Many people claimed that Japan would pay up to half the travel expenses of visitors. Unfortunately, the Japanese government clarified that the campaign is only for domestic travel at this time. Sorry, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

If you are anything like me, you are getting antsy for a trip. Any trip! Most people we talk to these days just want to go somewhere besides their backyard! Well, we have some options for you in this post (or mid) COVID world. Here are some

          sample

          itineraries

in addition to the list below.

Diving - If you are itching to get back in the water, and who isn't? The Florida Keys are a great option. They are open for business as of June 1, 2020. We work with some great dive operators in the Keys, and we can put together a dive package that includes resort and diving. And if you don't feel like braving air travel yet, it's a long, but doable drive (about 20 hours from Austin). Diving in the Keys is like diving in paradise. With calm, crystal blue water, historic shipwrecks, exotic marine life, and colorful coral reefs, the Keys offer an abundance of experiences for divers of all levels. If you did want to drive, stop mid-way in Destin, Florida for some perfect white sand beaches!

National/State Parks - some national and state parks are open for business now. Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite are some of the well known ones. Check out some of the ones closer to home, like Palo Duro Canyon with cabins on site, or Balmorhea (which is currently closed but scheduled to open late summer) and if you have kids, be sure to check out Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas.

Grand Canyon – Arizona is open for business! This is another good one if you are okay with long drives and don’t feel like flying right now. Restaurants are open (limiting party sizes to no more than 10 people) and pools, gyms, and spas are allowed to reopen.

Southern California – San Diego and Santa Barbara have moved into Phase 2 of reopening, allowing restaurant dining rooms and some store to open. Los Angeles is not currently included in Phase 2. Some restaurants are still closed to dining in, but offer take out with a glass of wine.

Colorado – Currently under a “Safer-at-Home” order, which is less strict than a “Stay-at-Home” order, many retailers are allowed to open at 50 percent capacity. Essential businesses and solo outdoor activities are allowed.

Las Vegas – Las Vegas is back with some changes! There are fewer chairs at the tables, and dealers and other employees are required to wear masks. You will have your temperature checked before you check into your hotel. Some hotels may not be open just yet. Buffets have not reopened, and it’s not clear when or if they will. Hotel pools are operating at a reduced capacity. But there are deals to be found, including free parking, intended to welcome back guests.

Give us a call and we will work with you to find the perfect trip for you, and make sure that everything is safe and ready for you to have a great time!

With everyone’s summer travel plans being derailed, most people are looking to travel anywhere just about now. The easiest place would be the Caribbean. But, just because countries are starting to open back up, that doesn’t mean they are accepting tourists just yet. There is a lot of information out there and some of it is either out-dated or misleading. There are countries that say they are open but they are only open to their citizens. Also, maybe the country is open but restaurants, bars and attractions may still be closed. We are staying on top of all this information to find the best destination for you when you are ready to travel.

Here are some countries and their guidelines to reopening (note this information changes frequently):

Aruba – will be opening to visitors possibly between June 15 – July 1 but no specific date has been set yet. When the island opens, businesses will have to meet specific standards, called the Aruba Health & Happiness Code, and will get a gold certification seal, in order to open to visitors. They are reviewing the protocols travelers will need to comply with when visiting.

Bahamas – Currently in phase 1B of the 5 phase reopening plan, and international travel and tourism are included in phase 5. July 1 is the target date, but that is likely to change.

Barbados – Barbados never had an actual travel ban, but commercial flights were suspended until June 30, with no set date to resume. Visitors must quarantine in a government facility.

Bonaire – Travel ban extended to June 15

British Virgin Islands – Not expected to open until mid-August at the earliest

Cayman Islands – Travel ban extended to August 31, only returning residents allowed in the country and are placed under 14 day quarantine. Inter-island travel is also prohibited.

Curacao – Curacao has relaxed its shelter in place, but still has a curfew throughout the country, and the airport remains closed.

Mexico – Each state has its own dates for reopening. Some states say they are open but only to Mexican citizens for the first phase of reopening. Other states may be opening but many of the hotels are not open yet and many attractions are still closed. The land border between the US and Mexico is closed to non-essential travel until June 22.

Puerto Rico – They will begin slowly opening beaches and some businesses, but a curfew is in place from 7pm – 5am and masks are required in public.

St. Lucia – Phase 1 starts June 4. Airports will open and passengers will have their temperature checked and luggage sanitized. Passengers are required to present a certified COVID-19 negative test prior to departure from the US. Hotels and taxis must be certified to operate. Restaurants are open for carry out and delivery only. Masks are required at all times. Phase 2 to begin August 1.

US Virgin Islands – Airports are open. Health screenings will be done at the airport and arriving passengers must follow Governor’s current directives and monitor themselves for symptoms for 14 days. Restaurants and bars are open at a limited capacity. Nightclubs and casinos are still closed.

Boarding passes – Instead of handing over your boarding pass to the TSA officer, you will place your boarding pass on the reader yourself, and then hold it up for them to visually inspect it. This allows for a no-touch experience, reducing the potential for cross-contamination.

X-rays – There will be increased x-rays of food. You will need to place any carry-on food items into a clear plastic bag and then place the bag into a bin. This allows the TSA officer to check your food items without having to touch anything, reducing cross-contamination. TSA PreCheck members will not need to remove items from their bags.

Pack Smart – Make sure you don’t have any prohibited items in your carry on, like liquids greater than 3.4 ounces (water bottles, toiletries). The TSA is allowing one liquid hand sanitizer up to 12 ounces per passenger, in carry-on bags. You are required to remove it prior to x-rays. If there is any prohibited item in your bag, you will be directed outside of security to remove the items and re-scan your items at x-ray.

Social Distancing – you will need to allow for social distancing, increasing distances between passengers in line, and staggering use of lanes where available. Watch for visual reminders with proper spacing on the floors.

Masks – TSA officers are now wearing masks and travelers are encouraged to wear them through security also. You may need to adjust your mask during the screening process. Remove items from your pockets, belts, wallets, keys and phones and place them in your carry-on bag instead of bins in order to reduce cross-contamination.

Some other changes you may see include reduced security lanes, TSA wearing plastic face shields, TSA changing gloves after every pat-down, plastic shielding installed at travel document check points, and increased cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces around the screening areas.

Please check with your airline prior to your trip for COVID specific guidance, and arrive at the airport early to allow plenty of time to check in and complete security screening. Travel Masters will also help you navigate the new guidelines for travel when you book your next trip.

The US State Department has greatly reduced the Passport Agency operations and at this time they are not issuing new passports. If you applied for a new or renewed passport prior to March 20, they are still processing those, but new applications could take months. Expedited service has also been suspended for now.

Currently they will only process applications for life-or-death emergencies, which include serious illness, injury or death of an immediate family member that require you to travel out of the country within 72 hours.

There is no date set for them to resume processing applications, but they do advise NOT to mail in your application, because you will experience significant delays of several months to receive your passport and your citizen documents.

What Can WE Do For You?

Just in the past few months, someone told me, “I used to use travel agents, back when they were a thing!” and I was called an “Ancient relic.” But in this uncertain time of travel, there is no one better to have by your side than your friendly neighborhood travel advisor! Here are some of the ways we can help you during this Pandemic, and beyond.

Right now, airlines are overwhelmed with calls from frantic travelers wondering what their options are. Some have waited for hours on hold to get a refund, and then waited weeks to receive the refund. Some people may not realize, but we have a Global Distribution System in our office where we have access to the same booking engines that the airlines use. Which means when it comes to cancelling a flight and processing a refund, we can do it in a matter of minutes, and you get your refund in a matter of days! Now, that’s service!

We have also spent countless hours with our tour operators, going over options, working on details, getting people rebooked for later in the year, or next year, or whenever it might be safe to travel again. Try calling an online travel agency, first try finding a phone number, then try finding a real, live person to answer that phone, and then try getting a sympathetic ear of someone who can actually do something to help you out. For most of our clients, we were working behind the scenes on their trips before they even had to call.

Unfortunately, refunds at this time can be hard to come by. Especially because we prefer to work with smaller vendors that we’ve spent years building relationships with, instead of a huge corporation that won’t care if you don’t visit their resort, because thousands of other people will. They are the people that are hurting the most right now and they are bending over backwards to help us help you.

So remember that next time you see a “good deal” on an online travel agency site. Sure, maybe you’ll save a few dollars now, but in the long run, what will it cost you?

Make sure you have the right ID to travel domestically

Starting October 1, 2020, every air traveler over the age of 18 will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, a state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly domestically. Other acceptable forms of ID include US Passport, US Passport card, trusted traveler cards like Global Entry, NEXUS, etc., Department of Defense ID and more.

REAL ID compliant cards have a yellow star at the top of the card. If you are unsure if your license is complaint, you can contact your state driver’s license agency. State-issued enhanced driver’s licenses have a flag on the front.

Even if you have TSA Pre-Check, you will still need a REAL ID. Mobile or electronic licenses are not acceptable. Temporary licenses are not accepted. Children under the age of 18 are not required to provide identification when traveling with an adult within the United States.

Venice Tourism Tax – What You Should Know

Ah, Venice! With the magnificent Doge’s Palace, San Marco’s Piazza, the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, it is truly a magical city and one of my favorites. And apparently a lot of people agree with me! In 2017, Venice had over 36 million tourists, up 10% from 2016. And the numbers are only going up with the rise of cheap flights to Europe.

In the summer months, around 32,000 cruise ship passengers disembark in Venice every day according to the Port Authority. In August, more than 465,000 day trippers will make their way to the city, causing mass chaos with the additional 2.2 million tourists who will stay overnight.

I believe that everyone should experience Venice at least once in their lives, but it’s hard when it is wall to wall people and the alleys are so narrow. The amount of tourists is ruining the experience for everyone. And then there are the cruise ships, which have wreaked havoc on the city’s waterways and lagoons, sometimes colliding with other boats.

Thankfully, the government of Italy instituted a ban on cruise ships weighing over 100,000 tons from entering the Grand Canal and are now diverted to a neighboring industrial area. City authorities have brought in turnstiles designed to keep tourists our of some of the city’s most crowded areas over long holiday weekends. And during peak season, there are “decorum angels” that patrol some of the busier areas in town, warning tourists about eating or drinking in an undesignated area.

And now, the City of Venice will institute a tourism tax for day-trippers. The tax was announced last year and will be implemented on July 1, 2020. Right now the tax will be in the range between 3 – 10 Euros, ($3.30 - $11) a day. The tax will only be enforced for people who are visiting for the day, either by cruise ship, water taxi, plane or train.

Anyone who stays overnight already pays a tax as part of an accommodation charge at their hotel. There will be exceptions for people who travel to Venice for work, study or family reasons.

The money collected from the tax will contribute to general upkeep of the city, and help locals with the high charges they pay for services such as trash collection.

City officials will soon announce more details on how visitors can pay the tax, and will focus on how you can pre-pay over the internet or in neighboring towns.

Suffer From Jet Lag? There’s a Reason For That!

Apparently there are some people out there who don’t suffer from jet lag. I am not one of those people! But as it turns out, there is a good, scientific reason for it.

The definition of jet lag is “a temporary sleep problem that can affect anyone who quickly travels across multiple time zones.” Our internal clocks stay home while we travel to another time zone, making our whole system out of sync. And it’s not actually just caused by a lack of sleep.

You probably won’t experience jet lag flying from Austin to Los Angeles, but flying from coast to coast can really affect some people. Flying overseas is much more difficult. There are many reasons for jet lag, and a lot of it has to do with the mechanics of our bodies while in flight. You can’t do much to change your environment, but you can do a few things to prepare yourself, and help yourself after travel.

Dehydration – An airplane cabin is notoriously dry. Mostly due to the altitude, but also the airplane filtration system. Add in a few drinks with caffeine or alcohol, which also cause dehydration, and you get dry skin and eyes, headaches, dizziness and fatigue.

Stress – We all know how stressful travel can be! You arrive super early to deal with baggage, go through security, find your gate, try to get comfortable in an ever-shrinking seat, and deal with being around lots of people who are also stressed out. Don’t forget to breathe!

Germs – I am a bit of a germaphobe myself, so the thought of all those germs on that tray table adds to my stress. But the airplane filtration systems can help filter out germs, and that’s why it’s good to leave your air vent open. That doesn’t help you avoid the flu from the guy sitting next to you coughing on everything.

Elevation and Pressure – Cabins are pressurized so it lessens the effects of being at a high elevation, but it can still tax your body. The cabin isn’t pressurized to sea level, but at a higher elevation than what you may be used to, which means less oxygen in the air. That can lead to ear pressure, swelling, and other symptoms that make you feel like you have altitude sickness.

What can you do about it?

Drink – Drink lots of water and avoid sodas and coffee. This is the number one thing to help avoid jet lag. It’s tempting to have a cocktail and relax, and that’s fine, but drink water also to avoid getting too dehydrated.

Move – Moving is the best way to prevent swelling. It gets your blood pumping and gets oxygen to your brain so you can ward off fatigue. Try to get up and move around at least every 30 minutes. It also reduces the chances of blood clots, known as deep vein thrombosis, that can occur with sitting too long on long flights.

Eat Healthy – Try to avoid greasy, fatty foods that cause bloating and gas. Bring healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, veggies or energy bars. Don’t forget your vitamins! Vitamin C will help your immune system and B12 will help with stress and mood and give you energy. Drink some fruit juice to get your vitamins and hydrate in one step!

Pressure – Popping your ears is a great way to relieve pressure, as well as yawning, chewing gum and sucking on candy. It’s also a good idea to bring noise cancelling headphones and a good travel pillow to be more comfortable and you can even try meditation during the flight to relieve stress.

Trick your body – You can trick yourself into getting back into sync. Try to get on the time zone of where you are traveling to. Only sleep on the plane if it’s nighttime where you are headed. That will help you adjust more quickly when you arrive at your destination.

Don’t rush – taking the first few days in your new destination will help you adapt to the new time zone. Schedule time to rest from your flight before you are on the run again. You will have a much better trip if your body is healthy and rested!

Due to old battery packs possibly overheating, certain 15-inch MacBook Pros are no longer allowed on flights in either carry-on or checked bags. Apple recalled the particular models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 due to overheating battery packs. Make sure you check your MacBook to see if it falls under the recall. It is also recommended that you check with your airline on their policies so you don't run into any problems at the airport.

Starting August 20, you'll need to bring your own reusable water bottle when you go through the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). SFO is one of the most environmentally conscious airports in the country and now they are going one step further and banning the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. The ban covers single-use containers, one liter or less of purified water, mineral water, sparkling water and electrolyte-enhanced water. This is estimated to eliminate 4 million plastic water bottles every year!

Have you ever looked at the label at your sunscreen? Most sunscreens have chemicals that can be harmful to you but also to corals and fish. Recently many destinations such as Bonaire, Palau, Hawaii, Key West have banned the use or sale of sunscreen with certain harmful ingredients like Oxybenzone. Be aware that some sunscreens marked as natural may not be reef safe so make sure you read the labels. Stream2Sea is one manufacturer who offers reef safe sunscreen. Their founder is also a diver! Need some reef friendly sunscreen for your next trip? Give us a call!

If you have had flight cancellations and schedule changes this summer you aren't alone and it probably won't end soon. Why so many flight changes? The 737 MAX aircraft's return to service keeps getting pushed further and further out so airlines are trying to rearrange their schedule with their remaining planes. Even if you weren't on a MAX aircraft, you may still be affected as the airlines rework their schedules. Boeing is working on software updates for the aircraft. After the updates are complete, then it goes to the FAA for the recertification process. Many airlines have removed the aircraft from their schedule until November but it may be 2020 before the aircraft is flying again.

United Airlines has a new tool, ConnectionSaver, dedicated to improving the experience for customers connecting from one United flight to their next flight. ConnectionSaver automatically identifies departing flights that can be held for connecting customers, but also makes sure that those who have already boarded the aircraft arrive at their destination on time. ConnectionSaver also sends text messages to connecting customers (who has opted in to receive notifications) with instructions on how to get to the gate for their connecting flight and even how long it will take to walk to their gate.

United's ConnectionSaver technology automatically scans flights for customers who have tight connections to determine if the connecting flight can be held without inconveniencing other customers. The ConnectionSaver tool factors in variables such as the time it will take for late connecting customers to travel between gates as well as the impact the hold may have on other flights and customers.

Make sure you have the new United app and have opted in to receive notifications!

REAL ID and What You'll Need to Travel After October 21, 2020.

Is your ID compliant for travel after October 21, 2020?

  Is your ID compliant?

The final deadline for the REAL ID Act is coming up! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will stop accepting standard driver’s license or ID cards at airport security checkpoints starting October 21, 2020 for travelers flying domestically. Travelers will need to have a REAL ID or travel with their passport.

Currently, there are seven states which are not compliant with the REAL ID Act: Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. California is currently under review and is expected to be compliant by the end of May 2019.

The rest of the U.S. states are all currently compliant and are issuing REAL IDs. Travelers with a REAL ID will be able to travel domestically without a passport. The REAL ID compliant driver's license or ID card usually has a star in the upper portion of the ID.

Each state has to to follow the new federal requirements for issuing REAL IDs. Travelers can check with their state’s DMV to find out what they’ll need to bring before heading to the DMV to get an updated license.

The app you need for your next trip

Google Lens is the app you need for your next international trip. Imagine that you CAN read the street signs and menus without pulling out a book or typing it into a translate program. Now you can with Google Lens!

    1. Open the Google app

    2. Click on the square icon with the dot in it next to the microphone icon in the search box.

    3. When the camera opens, click on the Google Translate icon (the one at the far left on your screen).

    4. Then point your phone at the text and it will auto translate.

It's not always a perfect translation but it's better than no translation!

Do you know the top reasons that travel insurance claims are denied?

Do you know the top reasons that travel insurance claims are denied?

Here are the most common reasons:

      Not knowing your policy:

The first thing is to make sure you read the Description of Coverage so you understand what is and is not covered.

      Purchasing insurance too late:

If you purchase trip insurance, for example, after you get sick/injured or after a storm is named, it is too late to get coverage for illness/injury or storm.

      Not having the correct documentation:

If you get sick on a trip and don’t get the required documentation. The insurance company will need proof that you were sick and missed part of your trip. Make sure you see a doctor and call your insurance company so you understand what documentation you need so you can get it while you are still on your trip.

Waiting too long to file a claim:

Make sure you know how long you have to file a claim after your trip. It’s easy to come back from a trip and life gets in the way and you completely forget to file a claim until it’s too late.

Join us in Bali for an amazing adventure! Enjoy 5 nights at the incredible Mimpi resort where you are away from the hustle and bustle of Denpasar. Experience Menjangan National Park (underwater) or the West Bali (Bali Barat) National Park if you prefer to stay on land! Underwater you can see pygmy seahorses, mimpi octopus, nudibranchs, pipefish, turtles and more! On land, the West Bali National Park is home to 160 bird species including the almost extinct Bali starling. If you are lucky, you may also see the black giant squirrel, marbled cat or the Malayan porcupine!

After our relaxing stay at Mimpi, we’ll head to the coastal town of Sanur and the beachfront Maya Sanur Resort. In the next couple days we will tour Ubud, a town known for local arts and crafts. Be amazed at the artisans creating beautiful wood carvings, batik fabric or silver jewelry! We will also have the opportunity for an elephant safari ride! At the safari park we can also learn about the elephants at the elephant show and you may also be lucky enough to feed an elephant! There will also be time to relax at the resort or explore Sanur on your own. Join us on this magical adventure!

Join us for lively discussion on Saturday April 25 at 5pm at Scubaland Adventures about how to get the most out of your dive and adventure travel!

This month's feature destination is Sipadan Water Village located in Borneo, Malaysia. We'll have refreshments and a presentation about the resort and the unique eco-systems of the islands of Mabul, Kapalai, and Sipadan.

You'll see photos and videos from guests who have traveled with us to this amazing destination over the past 20 years. If you are a regular traveler to the water village come find out about what's new - and there is a lot of new stuff! If you are new to dive and adventue travel then you need to know about Sipadan Water Village! This isn't a bucket list trip. This is the whole bucket!

Few destinations give you the opportunity to see amazing macro life like blue ringed octopus, flambouyant cuttle fish, and pygmy sea horses as well as large animals like sharks and turtles in abundance as well as huge schools of jack fish, barracuda, and bump-head parrot fish. Even fewer destinations allow you see all these things while living a life of luxury in an over the water bungalow!

Jennifer Aschermann, Senior Travel Consultant for Travel Masters, Inc. will be presenting Sipadan Water Village!

have had a lot of questions recently regarding if visas are required for US citizens traveling to Europe.

I want to clear up the confusion since there is a lot of conflicting information out there! US citizens visiting Europe (in the Schengen Area) beginning in 2021 will have to register through a system called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This is not a visa but a traveler pre-screening program (the US has something similar for inbound travelers).

Travelers will need to complete an online application prior to travel and pay a small fee (7 Euros, about $8 USD). This should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and will only require passport or other travel document information. It is estimated that 95% of applicants will receive a positive answer within a few minutes.

ETIAS visa waivers are valid for 3 years.
